What Happened
Soda blasting is abrasive cleaning using sodium bicarbonate as the media. On this Weston project 450 square feet of timber was blasted in a great room with exposed beams and posts. If you only read that one line, this looks like a modest job.
The rest of the estimate is what makes it a real one. 1,500 square feet of the room was covered in plastic and 500 square feet of floor protected before any media was fired. Four 24 hour negative air periods ran across the work. Afterwards, 1,500 square feet was HEPA vacuumed in detail. That is more than three times the blasted area, in every direction, and it is not padding. Blasting propels media and everything it removes off the surface at speed. It does not fall neatly at the base of the beam.
It travels, it settles on every horizontal surface in the room, and in a space with a cathedral ceiling and glazed doors it settles on all of them. The containment and the cleanup are the job. The blasting is the quick part. Three pieces of equipment were decontaminated per piece on completion, which matters on a blasting job because the gear itself is coated by the end of it. What was not sold here is worth being precise about, because blasting is often bundled with finishing work. No sealing, no coating, no antimicrobial and no refinishing of the timber was quoted or performed. No testing or clearance was carried out.
The timber was cleaned and the room was cleaned, and that is the whole of it. Anyone quoting soda blasting alongside a finish coat should be showing both as separate lines.
