In 2021 the 8.3 miles of gravel road in Tolland had to be rebuilt three to four times in a single year, because those roads have no proper drainage system and water runs over and through them. During two or three of that year's storms the town evacuated a campground over road washouts. The Willimantic River forms the eastern boundary of Tolland, in the regional plan's own words. The nearest long record is USGS 01119500 downstream at Coventry, draining 121 square miles with annual peaks logged since October 1931. The peak of that 94-year record still stands at 24,200 cubic feet per second and 18.66 feet on August 19, 1955. Boundary-river work is staged against Coventry because that is the only number that exists.
Skungamaug River And The Interior Brooks
Tolland's own watercourse is the Skungamaug River, which rises inside the town and runs south into Coventry to the Hop River. A gravel road running like a stream, a driveway culvert backing up, and a basement drain going the wrong way are three different emergencies that tend to arrive on the same night in Tolland. What To Do Immediately
